We arrived as a family of four in New Zealand in 2000 after 10 years of dairy cattle practice in the UK. We thought we would only stay a year but we’re still happy to be here. Becoming New Zealand citizens has given me and my family a sense of belonging. It is a huge privilege and pleasure to see my children as young New Zealanders.
The thriving dairy scene in New Zealand was a breath of fresh air and even with the up and down nature of the commodity cycle I continue to enjoy being part of an industry of national significance.
My current role as director of dairy research within Vetlife involves developing our capability for research, new dairy services for our clients and the provision of professional development for Vetlife colleagues. The most rewarding aspect of this is to see an idea develop from the first thought bubble to adoption and implementation. The challenges and rewards of delivering reputable, peer-reviewed science in a Practice environment continue to keep my job interesting and satisfying.
None of it would have been possible without the opportunities provided by education, professional development, an innovative and imaginative work culture, supportive colleagues and above all an understanding and caring family.
I hope to continue my own professional journey and have particularly enjoyed working and collaborating with colleagues within New Zealand’s Universities, DairyNZ, AgResearch, LIC and veterinary colleagues in industry and in Practice across New Zealand. So much out there is interesting: I just need more time and brain power to process it.
